Town Council Committees

The Mount Jackson Town Council utilizes a committee system to efficiently address the diverse needs of our community. These standing committees allow council members to focus on specific areas, thoroughly research issues, and make informed recommendations to the full council. This structure ensures that every aspect of town governance receives careful attention.

How Committees Work:

Following each biennial municipal election in July, the Mayor appoints the members of the six standing committees. Each committee consists of three council members, with each council member serving on three committees and chairing one. This ensures a balanced distribution of workload and expertise. The Mayor serves as an ex-officio member of all committees.

Committees are required to meet formally at least once between regular council meetings and report their activities at the next regular council meeting. This process fosters transparency and keeps the council and the public informed about committee work.

The Six Standing Committees:

Mount Jackson's Town Code (Sec. 2-33) outlines the responsibilities of each of the six standing committees:

  1. Finance Committee: This committee oversees all financial matters of the town, including budgeting, property management, and reviewing the annual audit. They also consider requests for fine or tax remissions. This committee plays a crucial role in ensuring the town's financial health and stability.   2. Public Services Committee: This committee deals with the operation and maintenance of essential town services, such as the water system, sewerage system, and sanitation.   3. Ordinance Committee: This committee is responsible for the development, review, and recommendation of all town ordinances.   4. Personnel Committee: This committee handles all matters related to town personnel, including hiring, compensation, evaluations, and addressing personnel disputes.   5. Public Properties and Facilities Committee: This committee oversees the management and maintenance of town-owned properties, including streets, alleys, sidewalks, parks, recreational facilities, and buildings.   6. Public Safety Committee: This committee addresses matters related to the safety and well-being of our community, including oversight of the police department, fire department, rescue squad, and emergency services.
