MOUNT JACKSON, VA – In honor of the United States’ 250th anniversary commemoration, the Town of Mount Jackson, the Mount Jackson Colored Cemetery Board of Trustees (MJCC), and the Shenandoah County Library Archives are proud to present “Roots & Resilience.” This immersive community event will take place on Saturday, February 28, from 11:00 AM to 1:00PM at the Shenandoah County Community Center - 6044 Main Street in Mount Jackson.
Roots & Resilience serves as a vital gathering point for residents and history enthusiasts to explore the profound impact of African American communities on the heritage of Shenandoah County. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to engage directly with historians, explore rare artifacts, and connect with the institutions that have shaped local Black history for centuries.
Event Highlights & Programming: The day will feature a curated selection of special displays and informational tables from local and regional history organizations, including the Shenandoah County Historical Society, the Handley Library, and the Shenandoah County Library Archives.
11:15 AM – Opening Remarks: Zachary Hottel, Shenandoah County Library Public Historian & Archivist, kick off the day’s activities with an introduction to the county's commemorative efforts.
11:30 AM – Featured Presentation: Local historian Rosemary Wallinger will present “The Forgotten History of Camp Wolf Gap,” a deep dive into the legacy of the African American Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) company that served at Wolf Gap.
Special Guests: The event aims to highlight voices from across the region, including Marquetta Mitchell and representatives from local churches and the Shenandoah Valley Black Heritage Project.
Community, Cocoa, and Conversation: Beyond the archives and exhibits, "Roots & Resilience" is designed to foster community connection. Guests are invited to enjoy "Hot Cocoa & Conversation," a dedicated space to discuss the stories shared throughout the day and reflect on the enduring spirit of the local African American community.
"This event brings dedicated groups into one space, offering the opportunity to explore, engage, and connect directly with the stories and artifacts that shape our community," says Zachary Hottel. "It is a celebration of history that has often been overlooked, brought to the forefront as we look toward the US 250th."
About the Hosts: The Mount Jackson Colored Cemetery Board of Trustees works to preserve and honor the resting places of African Americans in the region. The Shenandoah County Library Archives and the Town of Mount Jackson partner to ensure the diverse history of the Valley is documented and accessible to all.
